LET’S PEDESTRIANIZE MARKET STREET!
San Francisco belongs to the people who live here—not just the cars driving through it. We deserve better. And we should demand the city build it. Lets build a Great Greenway for San Francisco and let’s start by pedestrianizing Market street
The Cyclist’s Manifesto
1. NO CARS ON MARKET STREET.
Make Market Street a permanent people-first pedestrian/cycling parkway. Keep Muni moving in dedicated central transit lane with shared platforms for bus and streetcars. Give cyclists protected lanes, pedestrians room to breathe, and neighborhoods more trees, gardens, and public space. No private cars cutting through the heart of our city.
2. BUILD THE GREAT GREENWAY.
One continuous, physically protected bicycle network connecting Fisherman's Wharf, the ferry terminals, Market Street, the Wiggle, Golden Gate Park, and Sunset Dunes—with safe, low-hill routes with arteries extending into every neighborhood. Trade unnecessary asphalt for native plants, shade trees, protected greenways, safer crossings, wider sidewalks, and public gathering spaces. Build greener streets that reduce traffic noise, improve air quality, support urban biodiversity, and make our neighborhoods more enjoyable. Aim to provide a safe cycling lane within 5 mins of every home in city.
3. PROTECTION, NOT PAINT.
Separate bicycle lanes from both automobile traffic and pedestrian pathways with substantial physical barriers, landscaped medians, and clearly designated crossings. Build real physical protection between bicycles, cars, and pedestrians. Fix dangerous intersections. Eliminate hazardous streetcar-track crossings. Make our streets safe for children, seniors, commuters, and everyone who doesn't feel comfortable riding in traffic. Pavement paint is not sufficient protection. If a bike lane isn't safe enough for a child to ride, it isn't good enough for San Francisco.
4. SAFE BIKE PARKING IS A RIGHT, NOT A PRIVILEGE.
Every major building should make room for bicycles. Require parking garages, commercial buildings, and large residential developments above defined size thresholds to provide more secure bicycle parking than their baseline minimum requirements, with dedicated spaces for employees, residents, customers, and visitors. This bike parking should be accessible to general public depending on community needs.
Mandate convenient bicycle charging outlets and secure, fire-safe e-bike charging facilities in qualifying buildings. Expand free public bicycle parking and safely managed e-bike charging stations at ferry terminals, transit hubs, and major public destinations. No more circling the block looking for a bike rack. No more leaving expensive bicycles vulnerable to theft.
5. Tax the Rich
San Francisco has the wealth. We deserve the streets. We propose a $3 billion investment over 10 years—approximately $300 million annually—to build a citywide network of protected greenways, safer intersections, secure bicycle parking, and accessible transportation. Tax extreme wealth, large AI and technology corporations, commercial robotaxis, and car-dependent businesses to fund this transformation. Establish a publicly accountable Great Greenway Fund to ensure money goes directly toward construction, maintenance, and safer streets. LET'S MAKE THE PEOPLE WHO PROFIT FROM OUR CITY INVEST IN ITS FUTURE.
